Muslim athletes address Israel-Hamas war

Enes Freedom, the (probably) former NBA player who is always good for a polarizing political take on social media, did nothing but make sense in a Nov. 9 Twitter post addressing the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestine-based Hamas militant group.

Freedom recorded a video titled “What Hamas did on October 7th has nothing to do with true Islam,” referring to the coordinated attack by Hamas on Oct. 7 in which over 1,000 Israeli civilians were killed. Israel declared war on Hamas in response, and — in what many observers are calling an all-out genocide rather than an actual war — have since killed over 10,000 Palestinian civilians in the past month.

Freedom is a Muslim of Turkish heritage who was the 3rd pick in the 2011 NBA draft and peaked as a double-double producing 7-footer in the league. He last played in 2022 and believes he’s been essentially blackballed by the NBA for his outspoken political stances, specifically his criticisms of China — a country in which the NBA has lucrative business interests.

Other Muslim athletes have spoken publicly or taken to social media to address what is happening in Gaza and Israel. During the UFC 294 pay-per-view event in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 21, multiple Muslim MMA fighters used their post-fight interview time to talk about the war. Other figures in the sports world have used their platform to call for peace, or to call out those who they believe are committing or enabling wrongdoing.
