Undefeated ‘Prince’ Bell waits for crowning moment

On paper, it’s all there for Albert “Prince” Bell. The 31-year-old boxer from Toledo, Ohio, has an undefeated professional record (26-0); a highlight reel that includes some sudden and spectacular knockouts (9 total stoppages); wins over a few quality opponents; plus his share of marketability, personality, and a strong social media presence.

And yet the 130-pound contender — a super featherweight or junior lightweight, depending on who’s naming the weight classes — still finds himself ranked lower than expected by one of boxing’s major sanctioning bodies (10th by the WBC), and not ranked at all by two others (WBA, IBF). Were it not for his No. 1 contender ranking by the WBO, Bell’s hopes of getting a title shot anytime soon would be looking pretty bleak.

Bell, who is a practicing Muslim, last fought in March, when he brutally knocked out Jonathan Romero in the first round in front of Bell’s hometown crowd in Toledo. Romero, who once competed in the Olympics for Colombia and is a former IBF super bantamweight champion, was outclassed by Bell, who is still waiting for his first opportunity at a world title.

The Ring magazine, whose fighter rankings are among the most respected in the fight game, has Bell slotted 10th on its list of 130-pounders. His best chance at a title shot would be for the WBO belt, which is currently held by Mexico’s Emanuel Navarrete. (Oscar Valdez, also from Mexico, is the WBO interim titleholder.)

Albert Bell is trained by his father, Andrew, a former boxer. In the ring, the younger Bell shows the fight IQ and refined fundamentals often seen in someone who has the sport in his blood and has been coached since they were little. After his latest impressive performance, Bell is more than ready to fulfill his childhood dream of becoming a champion.

β€œI’ve been a pro for over a decade and have never lost,” Albert Bell said in a Toledo Blade article. β€œI’m ranked No. 1 in the world. I’ve beat undefeated fighters. I’ve beat world challengers. I’m fighting a former world champion. It’s my time. I feel like it’s been my time and it’s been a long time coming. But it’s all in God’s timing and I’ll take it however it comes.”
