The sports world — at least a superstar-studded section of it — convened in Los Angeles on July 11 for the 2024 ESPY Awards, the show that was created to honor the best in everything from golf to gymnastics, to all forms of racing and both versions of football, recognizing accomplishments on and off the field of play.
One of the night’s big winners was Jaylen Brown, who last month was voted NBA Finals MVP while his Boston Celtics claimed pro basketball’s highest title. Brown, a practicing Muslim, won the ESPY for Best Championship Performance. He beat out nominees Kayla Martello (Boston College women’s lacrosse), Midge Purce (NWSL), and Blake Corum and Will Johnson (University of Michigan football). Brown’s Celtics were also nominated for the Best Team award, but lost that one to the University of South Carolina women’s basketball team.
Also nominated for Best Team was the University of Connecticut men’s basketball squad, winners of a second straight national title in 2024. One of the Huskies’ key players is Hassan Diarra, a Muslim from New York. The senior point guard averaged 6.1 points and 2.4 assists per game this past season and won the Big East conference Sixth Man Award on the way to picking up his second national title. Diarra will return to UConn next season with a chance to be a starter as the Huskies go for the rare college hoops championship three-peat.
In the Best College Athlete men’s category, Clemson University soccer star Ousmane Sylla was a nominee, but lost to Louisiana State University football quarterback Jayden Daniels. Sylla, a Muslim from Senegal who now plays professionally for the Houston Dynamo in Major League Soccer, led Clemson to a national title and won the Hermann Trophy as the best college soccer player.
Reigning UFC lightweight champion Islam Makhachev was nominated for the Best UFC Fighter ESPN. Despite currently holding the No. 1 spot in UFC’s official pound-for-pound ranking, Makhachev lost the ESPY award to Sean O’Malley.
The Muhammad Ali Sports Humanitarian Award, named after the late great Muslim boxer, was given to the Maui surfing community, who helped the Hawaiian island rebuild after devastating wildfires.
