On the biggest day of the year for the second-biggest MMA promotion in the world, Muslim fighters dominated the stage.
The Professional Fighters League (PFL) held its 2024 season finale show on Friday, November 29th, where champions in six weight classes were crowned in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Four of the six new champs are Muslim: Light heavyweight Dovlet Yagshimurado of Turkmenistan, welterweight Shamil Musaev of Russia, lightweight Gadzhi Rabadanov of Russia, and featherweight Timur Khizriev of Russia.
The unique PFL format centers around a regular season in which fighters earn points for wins and stoppages, followed by a playoff tournament for each weight class, from which a champion emerges. Each tournament winner gets $1 million in prize money. The divisions are heavyweight, light heavyweight, welterweight, lightweight, and featherweight for men; plus womenβs flyweight.
Yagshimurado, 35, improved his pro MMA record to 25-7-1 with his title-winning knockout of Impa Kasanganay, who had won the PFL light heavyweight title in 2023. Yagshimurado’s combat sports background is in the Russian sambo wrestling, but on Friday he showed his dangerous striking ability by pounding Kasanganay to the mat with punches less than a minute into the first round. Prior to joining PFL he’d competed in Bellator, the company that PFL acquired last year.
Musaev, 30, is still undefeated as a pro (20-0-1) coming out of the PFL tourney. He secured the welterweight championship with a third-round knockout of Magomed Umalatov in an all-Russian, all-Muslim contest.
Rabadanov, 31, ran his career record to 24-4-2 on his way to the PFL title. The Bellator alum defeated Brent Primus via knockout in the third round of their lightweight final.
Khizriev, 29, kept his pro MMA record perfect (19-0) after a unanimous-decision victory over five rounds against Brendan Loughnane in the featherweight final.
