ONE Championship went to one of the world’s most famous fight venues and put on two shows in one day, both headlined by fighters from Muslim-majority countries.
At the historic Lumpinee Stadium in Bangkok, Thailand, the main event of the ONE Friday Fights 93 card on January 10th featured 18-year-old Lebanese phenom Ramadan Ondash in a strawweight Muay Thai bout against Kongchai Chanaidonmueang of Thailand. Later that day, the ONE Fight Night 27 card had a main event pitting Kyrgyzstan native Akbar Abdullaev, 27, against featherweight MMA champion Tang Kai of China.
In the early show, Ondash won a unanimous decision over Kongchai that was explosive from start to finish. Ondash was in control early and knocked Kongchai down in the second round with a powerful left hook, but in the third and final round Kongchai unleashed a barrage of kicks and knees upon Ondash that seemed to have him in trouble. Kongchai was unable to get Ondash off his feet, however, making it a foregone conclusion that the 18-year-old would take the decision after three rounds. Ondash improved his professional record to 11-2, and he’s won all three of his bouts in ONE Championship.
The biggest story line of the Friday Fights show was that, earlier on the card, Ramadan Ondash’s older brother, 23-year-old Abdallah Ondash, was also in action. Abdallah faced Petlampun Muadablampang of Thailand in a 126-pound catchweight Muay Thai fight, stopping the home crowd favorite in the second round with a left hook to the body.
Friday Fights 93 didn’t have any championship bouts. ONE did have title fights scheduled for the bigger Fight Night 27 show that was streamed on Prime Video — but then the main event became no longer a title fight.
Abdullaev was supposed to challenge for Kai’s MMA championship, but Abdullaev failed to make the featherweight limit of 155 pounds. The bout was instead contested at a 156.75-pound catchweight and still scheduled for five rounds like any other ONE Championship title fight, however Abdullaev was deemed ineligible to win the title. Win or lose, Kai would retain his belt — which made it pretty anticlimactic when Abdullaev won the fight via fifth-round stoppage. He walked out empty-handed when he could’ve walked out as the new champion and ended the reign of Kai, who’s held the featherweight MMA title since August 2022. Abdullaev improved his pro MMA record to 12-0, and is 4-0 in ONE Championship.
There was still one title belt on the line at Fight Night: the women’s atomweight (115 pounds) MMA interim championship. That was won by Denice Zamboanga of the Philippines, who stopped Alyona Rassohyna of Ukraine in the second round.
Other Muslim-majority nations represented on the full day of ONE Championship fight cards included Uzbekistan, Turkey, and Malaysia.
