Badr Hari forfeits fight after Morocco earthquake

On Friday night, just hours before Badr Hari was scheduled to compete in the main event of Saturday’s GLORY 88 kickboxing pay-per-view in Paris, a massive earthquake hit the legendary fighter’s home country of Morocco.

According to the latest reports as of this writing, more than 2,000 people have died in the Muslim-majority nation due to the 6.8-magnitude earthquake. Thousands more have been injured, countless families have been displaced from their homes, and rescue crews are still searching for bodies and possible survivors amidst the damage.

At Dome de Paris, during the fight card on which Badr Hari was the main attraction, he instead walked to the ring surrounded by his team, clearly not dressed to fight. Hari, who is Muslim, took the microphone and addressed the crowd — many of whom had no doubt come specifically to see him face British heavyweight James McSweeney — to explain that he had decided not to compete in wake of the tragedy back home.

GLORY ruled the fight a forfeit/TKO loss for Hari, which means the former kickboxing world champion and Dutch national Muay Thai champion is now 0-4 in GLORY with three no-contests. (His career professional kickboxing record is 106 wins, 16 losses, and three no-contests; he’s won 92 fights by knockout.) The 38-year-old hasn’t scored a victory since 2015, before he signed with the GLORY promotion. McSweeney was interviewed in the ring after the announcement and said he understood and respected Hari’s decision.

Before the GLORY show began, Badr Hari made a statement about the earthquake on his Instagram:

In what became the de facto main event, Sarah Moussaddak challenged Tiffany van Soest for the GLORY women’s bantamweight championship. Moussaddak is also of Moroccan descent. She decided to fight despite a heavy heart following the earthquake, and lost via second-round knockout in what was announced as van Soest’s retirement bout.

Two other Moroccan kickboxers, middleweight Iliass Hammouche and welterweight Karim Ghajji, also fought on the GLORY 88 card. Hammouche defeated Florian Kroger by decision, while Ghajji lost to Nikola Todorovic by decision.
